Michelle Dockery shares her thoughts on series 4
Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery recently discussed the impact that the tumultuous events of series 3 may have on her character, the imperturbable Mary Crawley. Serious spoilers ahead for series 3.
Downton Abbey fans were left aghast after the unfortunate and untimely death of Matthew Crawley in the third series’ Christmas special. But after jaws had been scraped off the floor and a semblance of coherence had been restored, the obvious question presented itself: What will become of Mary? Actress Michelle Dockery recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and put forward her theories on Mary’s reaction to Matthew’s death, and her future.

“I imagine Mary will not be able to move on very quickly,” Dockery admitted. “It will be very difficult to replace the love of her life.” Dockery noted the positive changes her character had experienced over the third series, observing that “Mary was largely happy and content… I find myself smiling more often as the character.”

But given the drastic change in her emotional circumstances – Mary is now widowed with an infant son – Dockery predicts that she “will not that smile again for a while. I’m sure she won’t come out of mourning too quickly.” But Downton Abbey‘s Powers That Be may beg to differ. Executive producer Gareth Neame recently welcomed the opportunity to “reset” Mary and begin a new romantic chapter of her life.
To that end, reports have recently surfaced indicating that Downton is looking to cast one “Lord Anthony Gillingham,” who will allegedly serve as Mary’s love interest in series 4. Granted, Downton Abbey has a consistant pattern of skipping past years in its storytelling mechanism, so it’s quite likely that Mary’s move forward will take place after a suitable period of mourning.
Still, we can’t help but hope that Michelle Dockery’s predictions are accurate, and we viewers will have at least an episode or two to recover from Matthew’s loss alongside the woman who loved him. Series 4 of Downton Abbey is scheduled to begin production in February, and will air on ITV in the fall.

Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife were billed as battling for Christmas Day ratings supremacy at the end of 2012 - but Laura Carmichael and Lily James, who play Lady Edith and Lady Rose in the ITV flagship Downton, say there's no rivalry between the two shows. Speaking to RadioTimes.com at the RT Covers Party, Carmichael said: "These are our friends! The gang that we know. Jessica's gorgeous."
"I love the little competition, the enemy warfare [that journalists try to create]!" added James. "But Jessica's wonderful."
"It's got nothing to do with any of us," Carmichael said. "They're just people of similar age doing similar jobs. They're our pals!" Carmichael also praised the shows that missed out on a Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding ensemble in a drama series - one of the American gong show's top categories, for which Downton was a surprise winner earlier in the week. "This week we are all on cloud nine," Carmichael enthused. "It's so amazing to be considered among those shows that we all watch: Homeland and Mad Men, it's insane. Insane!"
